Kent’s former South Africa batsman Martin van Jaarsveld cracked another century but finished on the losing side in the Friends Provident Trophy group match against Somerset at Canterbury.
Van Jaarsveld, who has signed a contract with Woodworm cricket bats, equalled his career-best one-day score of 132 not out.
His innings spanned just 125 balls and van Jaarsveld struck 13 fours but there was no support for the prolific South African. Justin Kemp was the only other batsman to top 20 as Kent struggled to 251 for nine in reply to Somerset’s 296 and were beaten by 45 runs.
Van Jaarsveld’s former Kent team-mate Peter Trego helped to peg back his former county, taking four for 56.
Van Jaarsveld, who was voted the Professional Cricketers’ Association Player of the Year last season, has made a superb start to the new campaign having made three centuries in successive championship matches for Kent who are bidding to reclaim their First Division place having suffered relegation for the first time last September.
Van Jaarsveld, 34, played nine Tests for South Africa between 2002 and 2005. He was Northamptonshire’s overseas player in 2004 but joined Kent as a Kolpak registration in 2005.
He suffered a dislocated shoulder playing for the Titans franchise team in South Africa only three months ago but he made a quicker-than-expected recovery and was able to rejoin Kent for the start of the new season.
