Tait set to sign for Glamorgan

Glamorgan are close to finalising a deal to bring Shaun Tait to the SWALEC Stadium for the 2010 Twenty20 Campaign. The Australian fast bowler is set to bolster the Welsh County’s bowling department as they seek to improve on a poor 2009 campaign. Glamorgan could only manage two wins and avoided finishing last courtesy of a slightly better net run rate than Gloucestershire.

"I can't say much at this stage but it will be a good signing," said coach Matthew Maynard.
"We're looking for a quick bowler, the guys we've signed are primarily batsmen and we're a little short on bowlers for the Twenty20."

Tait has enjoyed international success with Australia spearheading the bowling attack that helped his country to win the 2007 World Cup. The fast bowler took 23 wickets at an average of 20.30 to finish as the joint second leading wicket taker in the tournament.

In all, Tait has 22 ODI caps and made three test appearances for Australia. He took a break from the game in January 2008 citing the rigours of international cricket had left him feeling “physically and mentally exhausted” although the South Australian returned two months later.

Former Australian bowler Jason Gillespie, who spent a year with Glamorgan in 2008, believes Tait would be a good signing.

"I did mention to Matthew Maynard when I played there that he would be someone he should look at some time down the track," Gillespie said.

"He's an attacking wicket-taking bowler which is exactly what you need in Twenty20. He would be a fantastic acquisition."
