Warwickshire have suffered a huge blow with the news Chris Woakes will miss the start of the new county season after damaging ankle ligaments during their pre-season tour of the Caribbean. It is thought that Woakes could be out of action for up to two months.

The all-rounder, who has played four one-day internationals and three Twenty20s for England, sustained the problem when diving to a stop a ball during the Barbados Twenty20 Cup final against Yorkshire at the Kensington Oval.

The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, which could see him miss at least four LV= County Championship matches and the start of the Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign.

Woakes’ injury is a big blow to Warwickshire’s hopes of making a strong start to the new campaign. They are well-stocked with seam-bowlers but Woakes is the pick of the bunch and also a supplier of important late-order runs.

He averaged 47 with the bat and took 56 wickets in the 2011 County Championship as Warwickshire finished runners-up in Division One.

He was named in the Team of the Year at the Professional Cricketers' Association awards and was second in the Young Cricketer of the Year category.
